My memories of my Aunt Mary and Uncle Paul are dim, and I regret not having had the chance to get to know them better. When they would visit Nebraska at reunion time, I was very young and don't have any clear, specific recollections.
In fact, my only clear memory of my Aunt Mary is from her last visit to Nebraska in September 1999, and there was a gathering at my parent's house. Uncle Chuck was there, too, as well as Uncle Don several others. I remember sitting around their dining room table, listening to Mary, Don, Chuck, and my dad reminisce about the old days, and breaking into song every so often thanks to Chuck. My dad and I set a tape recorder on the table to try and capture some of the conversation, but to our dismay when played back it was all muddled and indistinguishable. This gathering was also the last time I would see my Uncle Chuck and Uncle Don.
Thank goodness Glenn Epley was there with his video camera and was able to capture some of the magic of that evening on tape. The house was packed to the gills with people, but everyone was having such a fun time telling stories, singing, and connecting with each other. It was a true Hird gathering.
